Islamorada (pronounced eye-lah-mah-rah-dah), the very name conjures images of surf, sand and seafood! Named "purple isle" by early Spanish explorers, this legendary village of islands in the Florida Keys has draw anglers from around the world intent on catching the trophy fish swimming its pristine waters.
Established in 1948, the Islamorada Fish Company started as a family owned and operated business in the wholesale business supplying fresh seafood to locals and restaurants. When the Hertel family took it over in 1981 (rumor has it George Hertel won the place in a family card game) they started shipping fresh seafood and serving old family recipes of smoked fish spread, conch salad, conch chowder ect. in the retail market. In 1993 the story goes that someone brought in a fry daddy deep fry fryer so the fisherman could fry fresh caught fish in Panko bread crumbs after a hard day of fishing. This bec ame a hit, two picnic tables and a screened in porch came next and the rest is history and we grew to become a world famous destination. In 1998 Islamorada Fish Company and the Johnny Morris’s Bass Pro Shops of Springfield Missouri formed a partnership, creating even more national notoriety. As our business grew in 1999 we bought and remodeled the Green Turtle Cannery next door which now is our wholesale/ retail operation which is a state of the art FDA inspected facility. In 2003 Bass Pro Shops took over ownership and we now have over 24 Islamorada Fish Company Restaurants all over the Country.
